When a van on the southbound side of the I-805 freeway in San Diego struck a Caltrans sign, the debris flew over the median into northbound traffic and sparked a flurry of incidental accidents.
In the midst of the thick early morning fog at around 3:30 a.m. at least five or six other vehicles, including a cement truck, collided on the northbound lanes. The California Highway Patrol reported that the cement truck drove between two stopped cars on the freeway, then struck one before crashing into another.
When one of the drivers thought the chaos had finally come to an end, he stepped out of his car and was struck by the cement truck. He was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he is in critical condition. The pedestrian was the only victim that sustained life-threatening injuries.
The northbound side of the I-805 was closed for more than an hour while authorities recorded the scene and removed the debris, and was reopened to all traffic just before 8 a.m. The driver of the van was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. CHP wants to remind motorists that in certain weather conditions like the heavy fog of that early morning, the speed limit is not the speed limit and drivers need to slow down. Drivers that were not at fault for the accident, but sustained injuries are urged to contact a San Diego car accident attorney and see if they have a case.
