In a devastating incident that occurred on Saturday, May 20, shortly before 10 a.m., one person lost their life and another sustained injuries. The Riverhead Police received a distressing 911 call reporting a large box truck veering off the travel portion of Sound Avenue, east of Edwards Avenue, resulting in a collision with a utility pole and subsequent overturning.
Emergency response units swiftly arrived at the scene to find the overturned truck on the south side of the roadway. Tragically, a 41-year-old man from Brooklyn, identified as a passenger, was pronounced dead by Riverhead Ambulance paramedics. The driver, a 31-year-old man from Brooklyn, managed to exit the vehicle with minor injuries and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital via Riverhead Ambulance. He is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. The identities of those involved are being withheld until their next of kin are notified.
The Riverhead Police’s Detective Division was called to the scene to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Initial findings indicate that the truck was traveling westbound on Sound Avenue when it veered off the roadway, colliding with a LIPA utility pole and a large tree before overturning.
To aid in the investigation, the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Section and Suffolk County Crime Scene Units have provided their expertise and support.
