In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a tragic accident occurred on the Cross Bronx Expressway, when a car and a tractor-trailer collided. Reportedly, a white BMW attempted to overtake a tractor-trailer near the exits for the Major Deegan Expressway at 1:43 a.m., setting off the deadly crash.
The impact caused the BMW to crash into the rear driver’s side of the tractor-trailer and become wedged between the truck and a concrete divider. The vehicle’s passenger, 22-year-old Sulayman Njie from the Bronx, was quickly transported to St. Barnabas Hospital. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced dead.
The BMW’s driver, a 19-year-old, sustained minor injuries in the incident. The 52-year-old tractor-trailer driver, however, was unharmed and stayed at the crash site.
Authorities are investigating excessive speed as a potential factor in this fatal accident. The westbound lanes of the Cross Bronx Expressway had to be closed during Wednesday morning’s commute due to the crash. At this time, the identities of the driver and the deceased have not been publicly disclosed.
