Monday’s Delivery Truck Accident Results in One Fatality and Three Injuries

A fatal accident involving a delivery truck claimed the life of a Carmel man and resulted in two other delivery workers being rushed to the hospital on Olive Branch Road on Monday morning.

The individual who lost his life in the incident has been identified as Alexander J. Colmenares Fernandez, aged 22, as per the accident report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The accident happened around 9:10 a.m. in the 3000 block of west Olive Branch Road, to the west of State Road 135, as stated in a press release by the sheriff’s office.

On reaching the scene, deputies discovered a delivery truck situated in the eastbound lanes of Olive Branch Road. It seems that a delivery for a Home Depot was underway at a nearby house. Three workers were busy unloading an item from the delivery vehicle when an eastbound pickup truck rammed into the rear of the delivery truck, the press release explains.

The collision trapped Fernandez between the two trucks, leading to his death on the spot, as stated in the press release.

Both the remaining delivery workers and the driver of the pickup truck sustained injuries and were transferred to Eskenazi and Methodist hospitals for medical attention, as mentioned in the release.

The pickup truck driver informed the deputies that he was unable to spot the stationary delivery truck on the road due to the blinding sunlight. The sheriff’s office doesn’t suspect intoxication or reckless driving to be contributing factors to the accident, as indicated in the press release.

Chief Deputy Andrew Barnhart described the situation as “a tragic accident due to difficulty seeing in the rising sunlight.”

This report was updated at 5:04 p.m. to include the identity of the driver.
